Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about UK customs declarations and our services.
What is the Customs Declaration Service (CDS)?+
CDS (Customs Declaration Service) is HMRC's system for processing UK customs declarations. It replaced the older CHIEF system and is now the primary platform for submitting import and export declarations in the UK. All businesses trading goods internationally must use CDS or work with an authorised agent like CDS Declarations.
Do I need an EORI number?+
Yes — any business or individual importing or exporting goods between the UK and non-UK countries requires an Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number. Without one, your goods may be held at the border. We can assist you in registering for an EORI number quickly.
How long does a customs declaration take?+
Standard import or export declarations submitted via CDS are typically processed within a few hours. Urgent or time-sensitive declarations can often be turned around faster — contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
What information do I need to provide for a declaration?+
Key information includes: commodity codes (HS/tariff codes), country of origin, supplier/buyer details, invoice value and currency, shipping/transport details, and any applicable licences or certificates. Our team will guide you through every data element required.
What is a commodity code and why does it matter?+
A commodity code (also called an HS or tariff code) is a numerical code that classifies your goods for customs purposes. It determines the rate of import duty and VAT you pay, and whether any import controls or licences apply. Incorrect classification can lead to overpaying duties or regulatory penalties.
Can you handle declarations for any type of goods?+
Yes — our team is experienced across all commodity types, including general merchandise, food and agricultural products, chemicals, machinery, textiles, and more. We are familiar with the full range of CDS procedure codes and special customs regimes.
What is the difference between an import and export declaration?+
An import declaration is required when goods enter the UK from outside the UK customs territory. An export declaration is required when goods leave the UK. Both must be submitted through CDS, though the data elements and procedure codes differ. We handle both.
How much does it cost to use your services?+
Our pricing depends on the volume and complexity of your declarations. We offer competitive rates with transparent pricing — no hidden fees. Contact us for a personalised quote.
What happens if a declaration is rejected by HMRC?+
If HMRC rejects a declaration, we investigate the reason, correct the error, and resubmit immediately. Our 99.8% first-time acceptance rate means rejections are rare, but our team is always on hand to resolve any issues quickly.
Are you available outside of normal business hours?+
Yes — we provide 24/7 support, 365 days a year. Customs does not stop at weekends or on bank holidays, and neither do we.
